For our upcoming Secret Spaces event at the private penthouse of the Marine Building on August 8th, we asked Harry Hertscheg (Vancouver International Wine Festival ED and co-host of our event) some vinous questions:
What is your favourite summer wine?
Bubbly with grapefruit juice for breakfast. Rosé at lunch. Riesling on a patio in the afternoon. Slightly chilled Pinot Noir with dinner. But not necessarily all on the same day, of course…
Tell us your best wine-touring moment of the last year.
Meeting the Count of Maser in the Veneto region of Italy, just north of Venice, and tasting his spicy, complex Carmenere at his winery, Villa di Maser, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carmenere is a signature grape of Chile and is one of the red Bordeaux grapes, but it’s been grown for over 100 years in the area of Montello e Colli Asolani (DOC), a wine region I hadn’t ever heard of until I was there face-to-face tasting wines with the Count.
I have no idea, but I’d love to spend a weekend here (photo right) popping the corks off Champagne…
What is your desert island vintage?
Wines are constantly evolving, changing and aging in character, so if you’re stuck on an island for a long time (without a good, cool cellar to slow down the aging process), it’s risky to bring a specific harvest year with you. You need something that can withstand the long haul, like a sturdy, non-vintage fortified wine. I’d be in good stead with an already well-aged Tawny Port, dry Palo Cortado Sherry or Bual Madeira.
