“A monument to the power of our relationships” - Stir Magazine

  • Developed during her time at Theatre Conspiracy as Artist in Residence, Himmat is a story about relationships between complex and conflicted people. Playwright Gavan Cheema takes us through a journey about the moments of joy and struggle throughout the process of repair and recovery. Himmat is a story that inspires you to care. A bilingual narrative in Punjabi and English, Himmat delves into the world of a father and daughter born generations and miles apart. It is a gut-wrenchingly honest depiction of a working-class family’s struggle with addiction and labour. Told through flashbacks and set in Surrey Memorial Hospital, Himmat takes audiences on a journey exploring the complexities of family history and immigration. As secrets are revealed, Banth and Ajit unpack their memories, discovering how family dynamics and relationships change over time.

“This story is deeply personal. Growing up in a Punjabi household with immigrant parents, there were two things I knew too well; Punjabi dads express their love in complex ways – and don't ask them questions about the Crown and Coke" - Gavan Cheema, Playwright

Himmat first premiered at The Cultch in May 2022 and is slated to have a remount at The Surrey Civic Theatres in April 2024.
