It’s all over, Orwell

Orwell. He’s dead. He’s still all over.

Has the term “Orwellian” ever been more used and abused than in 2015? It’s all over, Orwell, brings a contemporary eye and ear to the writer’s collected works.

“Never use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print,” George Orwell advised in his signature essay on writing, “Politics and the English Language”.

If that’s the case, maybe “Orwellian” is one of those prefab words that needs to be edited from daily use and abuse in political and cultural writing. Too bad. It sure does come in handy.

It’s all over, Orwell mines Orwell’s body of work to examine the income divide, propaganda and imperialism.  Conspiracy AD Tim Carlson and Richard Wolfe (Pi Theatre) got together to collaborate for the first time since Live From the Bush of Ghosts in 2009.

We completed our first creation session in October 2015 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby, our co-producer, along with Pi Theatre.

Lead by director Richard Wolfe, the cast included Nneka Croal and Brett Harris with live music and compositions by Jon Wood, set, lights and props by designer Lauchlin Johnston, and stage management by David “DK” Kerr.
